Rural Outreach

& Inclusion Program

Visiting Deaf Children in Rural Districts

At the ALDS, we believe that every deaf child deserves access to quality education and a sense of inclusion. That's why we've launched an outreach program to rural districts surrounding Ambo town. So far, our team has visited 7 districts and met over 200 deaf children and their families. We've invited all of these families to visit the ALDS and see for themselves the impact our school is making. Many families have traveled for up to 3.5 hours to attend these inclusion days. Our video showcases the first group of families who visited our school and experienced the difference it can make for their deaf children.

Rura Deaf Children Visit The ALDS

Rural Outreach: Deaf Awareness Training

During their visits to rural districts, the Outreach Team at the ALDS met with over 200 Deaf children and their parents to inform them about the Ambo Lazarist Deaf School (ALDS) and the benefits of education for Deaf children. They also provide Deaf Awareness Training to parents, including:

  • Challenging misconceptions about deafness and disability that can lead to stigma and exclusion.

  • Introducing Ethiopian Sign Language as a formal means of communication that can unlock a Deaf child's full potential and enable them to express their ideas, feelings, and opinions.

  • Emphasizing that Deaf children have the same potential to learn and succeed as any other child, and that education is essential for their future success.

  • Helping parents to understand the value of education for their Deaf child, and the positive impact it can have on their child's life and their ability to become a productive member of society.

By providing Deaf Awareness Training and promoting education for Deaf children, the ALDS Outreach Team is working to break down barriers and improve the lives of Deaf children in rural communities.
